Peloton Bike Review: Is the Price Tag Justified?

Peloton became a cultural phenomenon during lockdowns, and the hype has cooled somewhat since — but the product itself remains genuinely impressive. Here's an honest look at what $1,445 hardware plus $44/month actually delivers.

The Hardware

The original Peloton Bike has a 21.5-inch HD touchscreen, a magnetic resistance system with 100 micro-adjustment levels, and a heavy 38 lb flywheel. The screen pivots to face the floor for off-bike workouts. The frame is solid steel with minimal flex.

Clip-in pedals are standard (Delta-compatible). The seat and handlebars adjust on multiple axes, accommodating riders from 4'11" to 6'4" and 100 to 297 lbs.

The Content Ecosystem

This is where Peloton's real value lives. The All-Access Membership ($44/month) gives the whole household access to live and on-demand cycling classes, running, strength training, yoga, and outdoor walking classes. The instructors are some of the best in the fitness industry.

The live classes with a global leaderboard are genuinely motivating in a way that solo workouts rarely are. The high-five and shoutout systems sound gimmicky but create real community.

Compared to Alternatives

The NordicTrack S22i ($1,699) offers auto-adjusting incline and decline (which the Peloton Bike doesn't), a larger screen, and a cheaper content subscription through iFIT. For cycling specifically, many experienced cyclists prefer the S22i's more road-bike-like geometry.

The Echelon EX-5S ($799) is the budget competitor with a similar format and access to Echelon classes for $35/month. It's a genuine alternative if budget is the constraint.

Who It's Right For

Peloton is right for people who are motivated by community, instructor-led format, and consistent variety. If you're a self-directed athlete who just wants hardware, you're overpaying for features you won't use.

Verdict

The Peloton experience is excellent — genuinely best-in-class for instructor-led cycling at home. The total cost of ownership ($44/month ongoing) is the real consideration. If you'll use it 4+ times per week, the math works.
